Fast Network: Japan Sprinters Stakes Target & Cap Ferrat's Champions Cup Challenge (2026)

Japan is a likely destination for Fast Network, as the horse's connections are considering a tilt at the Group One Sprinters Stakes (1,200m) in Japan later this year. This decision comes after a successful campaign for Fast Network, which included a Group Three National Day Cup (1,000m) victory and two Group One placings. Dennis Yip Chor-hong, the trainer, believes a rest is warranted due to the horse's hard-fought races and long season. This break will likely precede Fast Network's overseas debut in September at Nakayama racecourse.

Yip and the owners had initially targeted the Group One Al Quoz Sprint (1,200m) at Meydan in March, but these plans were thwarted by the US-Israel war on Iran. The Sprinters Stakes has been a popular choice for Hong Kong trainers and owners, but it's a challenging race with only three international raiders having won it, including Silent Witness (2005) and Ultra Fantasy (2010). Fast Network's career-best success in the Group Three National Day Cup and his recent performances behind champion sprinter Ka Ying Rising have solidified his status as a quality sprinter.

In other news, trainer Francis Lui Kin-wai has set Cap Ferrat for a clash with Romantic Warrior in the Group One Standard Chartered Champions & Chater Cup (2,400m) on May 24. Cap Ferrat, who won last year's Hong Kong Derby (2,000m), will be ridden by Craig Williams, who also rode him in the Champions Mile. This will be Cap Ferrat's first test at 2,400m, although he has previously run over this distance in Australia, finishing sixth in the Group One ATC Australian Derby at Randwick in 2024.

Lui will also field Winning Wing in the Champions & Chater, who comes off a third-place finish in the Group Three Queen Mother Memorial Cup (2,400m). Trainer Ricky Yiu Poon-fai has ruled Voyage Bubble out of defending his Group One title due to further treatment on a capped elbow, and Lui is considering a break for Hot Delight after his first defeat in the Class Two Sai Wan Shan Handicap (1,200m).

These decisions and strategies showcase the competitive landscape of Hong Kong racing, where trainers and owners carefully consider their choices to maximize their chances of success. The upcoming races, including the Champions & Chater Cup and the Sprinters Stakes, will be highly anticipated events, providing an opportunity for these horses to showcase their talent and determination.
